How do I access and use Kurzweil 3000?

Kurzeil 3000 is web-based educational technology accessible by all current Carthage faculty, staff, and students. It’s purpose is to provide text-to-speech, text magnification, and screenreader functionalities. Kurzweil 3000 can be accessed on the web or offline by downloading software on your Windows or Mac computer.

Kurzweil 3000 has a Universal Library with built-in classic literature titles that users may access. To see these titles, log in to Kurzweil 3000 on the web.

Using Kurzweil 3000 Web-Based Program

Most of the features you need will be available on the Kurzweil 3000 web platform.

Accessing Your Kurzweil Account

1. Navigate to www.kurzweil3000.com.

2. Click "Sign in with Google."

 

3. You may be prompted to choose an account to sign in. Make sure to choose your Carthage account.

4. You will be prompted to grant Kurzweil permissions to access Google Classroom data. Carthage does not utilize Google Classroom. You will have to choose "Allow" in all four windows in order to use Kurzweil 3000.

5. Confirm your choices and click "Allow."

6. You may be prompted to choose your Carthage account again to complete the sign-in process.

7. Once your account is set up you should see a screen like the one below. In the future you may log in directly to www.kurzweil3000.com with your Carthage Google account.

 

Installing Read the Web Extension

Install the Read the Web Extension to your Chrome or Firefox browser to enable Kurzweil to read aloud webpages as you navigate the Internet.

Chrome

Navigate to the Chrome Store: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extensions. Enter "kurzweil 3000" into the search box.

Your results should turn up the "Read the Web Extention." Click "Add to Chrome."

 You will be prompted to confirm addition of the extension. Click "Add extention."

 

 When the extension is added to Chrome you will receive a confirmation message window. The icon shown is where you will click to begin reading the web. 

 

 You may also enable the extension when you log in to Kurzweil 3000 on the web. On the bottom of the screen click the "Enable Read the Web" button. 

 

Firefox

To download the Read the Web extension on Firefox, click on this link to download the software (https://www.kurzweiledu.com/downloads/currentversion/firefox-addons/readtheweb_3_2_14.xpi). When you have downloaded the file, open Firefox and drag and drop the file onto Firefox. 

I found the downloaded file in the Downloads folder on my computer, then dragged the file directly into the Firefox browser window.

You will be asked to confirm adding the extention. Click "Add."

When the extension is added to Firefox you will receive a confirmation message window. The icon shown is where you will click to begin reading the web.
