The original release of Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac caused application and system crashes on Mac OS X 10.11 “El Capitan” systems. If you’re using a machine that’s been purchased since this summer, or you’ve installed the free El Capitan update that the Mac App Store repeatedly offers users of less recent versions of OS X, this this will apply to you as well.

How to Check What Version of Mac OS X You’re Running

  1. Navigate to Apple Menu () > About This Mac
  2. The window that pops up states what version of OS X you’re running. It will look something like this:

If You’re Running Mac OS X 10.11.x El Capitan

If the window says “El Capitan” or “Version 10.11.x”, then you can install Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac. Double-click the Microsoft_Office_2016_Volume_Installer.pkg file at the top level directory of this DVD. When that’s done, if your version number is 10.11.2, move on to the next paragraph. If your version number is less than 10.11.2, navigate to the El Capitan Combo Update folder, and double-click OSXUpdCombo10.11.2.pkg.

When the machine is done restarting, navigate to the Microsoft Updates folder, and double-click each of the .pkg files to run them. Restart your machine, and you’re safe to launch your Microsoft Office programs.

If You’re Running Mac OS X 10.10.x Yosemite

If the window says “Yosemite” or “Version 10.10.x”, then you can still install Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac. Double-click the Microsoft_Office_2016_Volume_Installer.pkg file at the top level directory of this DVD. When that’s done, navigate to the Microsoft Updates folder, and double-click each of the .pkg files to run them. Restart your machine, and you’re safe to launch your Microsoft Office programs.

If You’re Running a Version Other Than El Capitan or Yosemite

If the window has any other version name or version number, then you’ll need to upgrade to at least Mac OS X 10.10.x Yosemite before you can install Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac.
